Infrared (IR) lasers

Infrared or IR lasers have a beam that is in the infrared spectrum which is from 750nm to 1nm in wavelength. This is a longer wavelength than visible light and a shorter wavelength than radio waves. With a beam that is invisible to the naked eye, IR lasers cannot be used for many normal applications such as light shows or alignment. This makes our Stealth IR laser pointer a specialist laser pointer that is not used by the average laser enthusiasts.

Applications

IR lasers are used by military forces and government agencies world wide in a number of uses. IR lasers are ideal for target acquisition on the battle field where a target can be “painted” with out revealing the lasers location. IR lasers are ideal for use with night vision devices that enhance IR. The invisible nature of IR lasers also makes them ideal for covert monitoring and surveillance. IR lasers are also used in both civilian and military capacity for explosive detection. CWE (chemical warfare agents) absorb IR light, giving them a unique fingerprint detectable by IR lasers. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the USA is working on a portable system for using IR lasers to detect CWEs.

Security systems and alarms based on IR laser beams are very effective because intruders are unable to see the beam or know they have triggered an alert. IR lasers have featured in a number of block buster movies in this capacity though normally with technical inaccuracies.

There are also a number of medical applications for IR lasers such as treating soft tissue injuries, promoting healing and as a treatment for acne. There are numerous documented cases where IR lasers such as our Stealth laser pointer have been successfully used to reduce swelling and inflammation of acute and chronic injuries.

Safety

Safety is a very important issue with IR lasers for two major reasons. Firstly because the beam is invisible, there is no way to avoid the beam and the eyes natural protective blink reflex will not work. The second is that normal protective eye wear for lasers will not work on IR lasers. Safety glasses that are opaque to 532nm and provide more than adequate protection against green laser pointers and portable lasers BUT will be completely transparent to IR lasers such as our Stealth laser pointer. IR lasers need safety glasses specific to IR light.

I am wanting to see in the dark as i have some land and would like to see what kind of predators we have before we bring in our chickens and ducks for the season. I tried to look around in different shops but could not find much as to a good explanation of what either technology is or if they are even the different. If someone who has more knowledge of this then i would let me know your wisdom i would appreciate it.

What i am gathering is that Infrared can only be seen with the help of infrared light and night vision only works if there is already some light available, such as moon light or a street light. This is probably ridiculous & untrue so if you could fill me i would appreciate it.

Also it seems there is are so many options to see what is going on in the dark, such as game trail cameras, hunting scopes, monoculars and binoculars. I really dont want anything expensive such as $200 & i know there must be a inexpensive way there always is.

Thank you for any help you can offer
Oh yeah i am now hearing about thermal vision as well, what is that compared to the other two? It seems all these meanings may be mixed and matched depending who you talk to. What i really would like to know is which is cheaper, and what is more available. Im getting the impression that thermal vision is what some people call infrared vision and that it can see people in the pitch dark by the body heat a person radiates and by looking around i found out this technology still isnt really available for anywhere under 1 grand. Is this all right?

If you think night vision infrared cameras are only available to the military and police, think again. Nowadays, you can buy a wide range of cameras and camcorders equipped with highly effective night vision functions.

After all, the night is the prime time for crime so when you set up a security camera system for your home or business, you need to make sure that it will capture images in low light conditions. Being able to monitor your property during the nocturnal hours is essential for your overall security. And if you’re an animal enthusiast, using an infrared wildlife camera allows you to observe nocturnal animals remotely. So how do they work their magic?

Standard security cameras usually feature ‘night vision’. This is a system that uses an integrated infrared illuminator. It uses banks of infrared emitting diodes to illuminate the scene with infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye but allows the camera to capture images in darkness.

You can also buy illuminators separately either as models that integrate into your camera or as standalone units. The drawback of such night vision cameras is that they only capture black and white. However you can get models that also record color during the day.

Another drawback of infrared cameras is that the distance they can record is limited by the distance covered by the infrared illuminator. For greater coverage you can get a true infrared camera which uses a micro bolometer, a sensor not dependent on any light source. Instead it registers radiation from another region of the electromagnetic spectrum – body heat. They work because objects of different temperatures emit different levels of infrared energy. The sensors in infrared cameras pick up these energy differences and convert them electronically into images which can be viewed and recorded.

This ability to measure heat means that these cameras can have a host of other applications in industries in which heat levels are critical. They can function as highly sophisticated heat sensors and monitoring systems. For example, they can keep an eye on the temperature of a liquid passing through a pipe.

One of the most popular applications for spy cameras is for wildlife photography. One of the pleasures of being a wildlife buff is being able to photograph your favourite fauna in their natural habitat. By using a wildlife camera, you can take both video and still photographs and get fascinating insights into the lives of your favourite animals and a permanent record to keep and enjoy.

The problem is of course that animals can be camera shy or at least human shy. Being able to get close enough to animals to effectively photograph them can be a really difficult task. One option is to use a wildlife camera. By setting up one of these covert devices in the animal’s natural habitat and then retreating to a distance, you can get stunning still and video pictures without disturbing the animals. You can view your images from a distance, record them, or both.

One good way to survey an area for wildlife activity is to use a trial camera. You leave a camera or two in locations where you think wildlife inhabit and leave them to record activity for a week or more. Just retrieve the camera and view the recording on the film, tape or media card and you’ll know the habits of all the wildlife in the area. Or just set up a webcam and check in at your convenience.

In fact wildlife webcams are very popular at the moment. For example if you don’t have time to head off to Africa, you can go on a remote safari viewing wildlife via a wireless IP wildlife camera positioned on the plains of the Serengeti. How’s that for convenience?

Infrared cameras can work in conditions of total absence of light. While to the naked eye the scene is in darkness, through your LCD viewfinder or on your monitor, the scene will appear as though it were daylight. Infrared cameras are essential for keeping you safe during the night hours and have many other uses besides. What’s more, they’re very affordable, easy to buy online, and a snap to set up and use.

IR-235 DX FLIR infrared camera is ideal for many purposes such as. IR-235 package is one of the smallest thermal imagers with a built in latest digital detector technology. The video output via RCA jack allows you to easily note down your thermal application. USB PC download cable along with a 2″ Active Matrix LCD onboard monitor, or removable SD ram card and the standard Adjustable eyepiece viewfinder helps store the attachments that are captures of live thermal movies or still thermal images.

This device doesn’t have heat sensors but rather infrared sensors that image emitted by all objects day or night. In this way we can also see the surroundings clearly. Even in the pitch black moonless night the target can be spotted. They might think they are in hiding but what they don’t know is that no one can hide from IR-235. It is also sensitive enough to get a lot of information which are invisible to an eye. For example the hand print left on the wall only after seconds contact. This happens because of the transfer of infrared energy from the hand to the wall. This device also shows you the areas of heating or cooling loss, moisture damage and mold infestation. It is simple and accurate.

It is very easy to use. As it is easy to use, the training cost reduces and so does the period of training. The agents can be out in the field immediately with the device. It does not take much time to learn unlike the other devices which are complicated. If the cost reduces that means that the nation is saved with a lot of money. This makes it affordable. You don’t have any buttons to push and no setting to remember about, all you have to do is point and shoot.

Applications:

• Energy audits.

• Mold detection.

• Building studies.

• Law enforcement.

• Military.

• Security.

• Surveillance.

• Facility maintenance.

• Condition monitoring.

• Roofing surveys.

• Mechanical & electrical analysis.

• Weapons inspections.

• Tank level integrity.

The start up time is 30 Seconds (Typical). It has got a Rechargeable Camcorder Battery (6VDC) – 4 included, with a Power Consumption of 5W. The dimensions are 7”L x 4”W x 4”H and weigh 2.3 pounds without a battery. The charging is done with an AC fast charger. The operating time after charging is for more than 3 hrs.

If you are going to get a security system for your home then you need to get a wireless infrared home security system. These are different from normal wireless home security systems in that normal cameras can’t see very good in the dark. That is why you need infrared wireless cameras.

To understand why you need infrared you need to understand how a infrared camera works. Infrared cameras display an image using infrared radiation. An infrared camera has infrared illuminators around the outside of the lens of the camera. These infrared illuminators allow the camera to see images when there is no light at all. With just a little bit of light an infrared camera can produce an image that looks like daytime but in the dark.

Infrared cameras are sometimes confused with night vision cameras but they are not night vision cameras at all. Maybe you have seen a military movie where they are using night vision goggles, they usually view the dark in a green color. This is typically what night vision cameras are viewed in. Infrared cameras are usually viewed in black and white. Some cameras can actually see color during the day but automatically switch to black and white at night.

Also wireless infrared cameras don’t use any wires so it can be placed inside and outside very easily, without being seen. Hiding a camera inside or outside so people do not know that it is there is an advantage over the perpetrator that you are trying to keep out of your house. You also don’t need to run special wiring on the outside of your house when installing an wireless infrared camera.

These cameras are much better then cameras that can only see during the day. Really if you think about it you need a wireless infrared security system because you are protecting you and your family mainly at night. That is usually when break ins occur. At night time it is also hard to see who is at your door and who is lurking outside on the street under the cover of darkness.

Wireless infrared home security systems are very popular today because they can be used in very little lighting, as well as they are fairly inexpensive and can be used both inside and outside. If you are a homeowner and are looking into purchasing a security system for your home consider a wireless infrared camera to protect yourself from intruders as well as other emergencies.

Using infrared technology they allow you to see in the dark so you can live out your fantasy of being an undercover CIA agent. The right goggle is fitted to an LCD display monocle similar to the viewfinder on a camcorder. The left goggle has a flip up, hinge mechanism, allowing you to see without removing the whole set when the device is not switched on.While the EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Goggles have a high-tech appearance, they are in fact very simple to operate . Adjust the strap to fit, flick the switch to ‘on’ and you’re ready to go. There are 2 viewing modes to choose from, authentic green or black and white. You can switch between sensitivity levels with the Stealth Mode offering great vision at close quarters, or for longer distances you can select the Surveillance mode which allows you to see at over a range of up to fifty feet. Eyeclops bring you excellent night vision with incredible clarity. If you wear prescription glasses you still get to play as Eyeclops have been designed to fit over most spectacles.Frankly, you’d have to be blinder than an eye-plucked Cyclops not to see the fun offered by the EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Goggles. From spooking buddies in the dark to enacting stealth-action video games, the potential for juvenile shenanigans is almost limitless. An unintentional side use for your goggle is as a good parenting tool for checking sleeping babies and kids at nightThe build quality of the EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Goggles is hard product to fault in a product that is essentially a toy.Designed to fit all ages and head sizes with adjustable, soft rubber straps, the goggles are surprisingly comfortable to wear.
